WHAT THINGS SHOULD I NOT TAKE TO THE CARRETERA AUSTRAL?

Last week we were talking about the essentials for a trip on the Carretera Austral. Today, the idea is to discuss the elements that it are better to avoid during your adventure in Aysén. Let's get started!

1) Shoes with high heels

A piece of advice for women visiting the region. Unless you want to bend your foot or suffer some kind of accident, avoid bringing heels to the Carretera Austral. Remember that here the trails and roads should always be done with comfortable shoes, whether they are sports shoes or trekking shoes. Comfort and safety when walking is key, as emergency services are also scarce.

2) Umbrella

Although it is true that in Aysén it rains a lot, strong winds can easily cause the umbrella to fly or break. In addition, it is uncomfortable to carry it everywhere, even more so when walking in the middle of a forest or an area with many branches. The best idea is to travel with a good raincoat and rainproof parkas.

3) Cotton clothing

Cotton clothing is not recommended for a rainy day, as it gets wet and cools the skin. It is better to dress in layers, with natural or synthetic fibers such as polyester, which absorb moisture and keep the skin dry and warm.

4) Too big and heavy suitcases

There are places like Caleta Tortel, where it is a true nightmare to walk to the accommodation with weights greater than 15 kilos. Better to take a backpack or a smaller suitcase (those that are allowed in the cabin of an airplane), to make the trip more pleasant. Also, they fit more easily in the car trunk.

5) Insecticide and insect repellent

In addition to being flammable and prohibited as airplane luggage, it is highly unlikely that you will need to use insect repellent in Aysén. The climate in the region is perfect for keeping critters at bay. In case of camping, a good tidiness inside the tent and keeping it closed will be enough for a good sleep.
